Pretreatment for aluminium profiles, particularly for powder coating to meet Qualicoat or GSB standards, typically involves a multi-stage process. In industrial applications, 5 to 8 stages are common to ensure durability and corrosion resistance.
The purpose is to remove contaminants, remove the natural oxide layer, and apply a conversion coating for strong adhesion and lasting protection.
Standard 5-Stage Pretreatment Process
- Cleaner / Degreaser: Removes dirt, oil and grease.
- Rinse: Removes residual cleaner.
- Etch or Acid Pickling: Removes the natural oxide layer and creates a uniform surface.
- Rinse: Removes etching byproducts.
- Conversion Coating: Applies a corrosion-resistant layer such as chromium-free zirconium or chrome.
Note: A final DI water rinse is crucial to prevent contamination before drying.
6 to 8+ Stage Processes for Higher Performance
For more demanding requirements, especially in harsh or coastal environments, additional rinses and special sealing stages improve chemical deposition and corrosion resistance.

- 7 to 8 stages: Reverse osmosis rinses and specialized chrome-free sealing options

- Etching / Pickling: Acidic treatment for a uniform matte finish
- Desmutting: Removal of residue after etching
- Conversion Coating: Chromate or chrome-free protection layer
- Rinsing: Water rinses between chemical steps, including DI water
- Drying: Hot air oven before powder application
